Wedding Photography Questions Couples Ask Me

Every couple asks some version of the same questions when they are working out whether I am the right fit. Here are the honest answers to the ones that come up most, grouped so you can find what you are after.

Part one

Booking and packages

IHow do we book you?+

It is straightforward. You enquire to check your date is available, I confirm, and we book in a call. If you would like to go ahead from there, you sign the contract and pay the deposit, with a payment schedule built around what suits you.

Your date is not confirmed until the contract is signed and the deposit is paid. I try to be fair to whoever enquires first, especially on popular dates, but I cannot hold a date without both of those in place, so if you know you want to lock it in, do not wait too long.

IIHow are your packages structured?+

Fill in the enquiry form and I will send you my pricing directly. I am not trying to hide anything, I just do not think a service like this belongs on a menu you scroll through on your own. Most couples choose full day coverage, though I am happy to offer shorter coverage if that suits your day better, and you can choose photography on its own or photography and video together.

IIIHow much time do we actually need for wedding photos?+

Half day coverage generally runs six to eight hours, which sounds like plenty until you realise it means choosing between the morning getting ready and the party at the end of the night. You simply cannot fit both into that window on most wedding days. That is exactly why I recommend full day coverage wherever it is possible. It removes the choice entirely.

IVCan we customise our photography coverage?+

Yes. No two weddings are the same, so coverage can be shaped to suit yours. Extra hours, an additional photographer or videographer, film, drone, priority editing and printing can all be added to build coverage around your day rather than a fixed template.

VDo you photograph elopements and smaller weddings?+

Yes, coverage starts from as little as 90 minutes. Ask for a copy of my intimate wedding guide for more on how that works.

VIWhat happens if we need to cancel or move our wedding?+

Life happens, and I understand that. It is exactly why having a contract matters, for both of us. I will always be as accommodating as I can be, and any decisions around cancelling or rescheduling are handled in line with the contract, in a way that is fair to both sides.

Part two

Family and group photos

IDo you offer engagement or pre wedding sessions?+

Yes. An engagement shoot is a chance to get familiar with how I work and to relax in front of the camera, with none of the pressure of an actual wedding day. We can shoot it wherever suits you, a favourite spot, somewhere with meaning, somewhere new entirely.

IIDo you bring a second photographer?+

Usually it is just me. I do have a team of photographers I would trust to photograph my own family, all working in the same style and approach I do, and if your day would benefit from a second set of hands, that is something we talk through on the discovery call.

IIIHow do you handle family and group photos?+

Family photos are easy when you know what you are doing and you have come prepared. Every couple who books with me receives my family photo planning guide, which takes the guesswork out of it before the day even arrives.

IVHow long should family photos take, and how many will we get?+

Done properly, family photos take around 20 minutes. It comes down to preparation more than anything else, which is exactly what my family photo planning guide walks you through, so the list is sorted and everyone knows where to be before the moment arrives rather than during it.

VDo we need to give you a family photo shot list?+

A family list, yes, and it makes things easier for both of us. It is already covered in the family photo planning guide I send every couple. A minute by minute shot list for the rest of the day, no. If there is something specific you would love photographed, mention it in our planning call and I will make sure it happens. Otherwise, I generally cover everything that matters through the day without needing a checklist.

VIWhat if our family dynamics are complicated?+

I come from a split family myself, and Mel's family history is just as colourful, so there is no judgement here at all. Let me know in the planning meeting, we will talk it through, and I can often offer a bit of advice on handling those relationships on the day too. I am also fairly thick skinned and get along with most people quickly, so I keep things lighthearted and build rapport fast, whatever the family situation looks like.

Part three

Galleries, prints and albums

IHow many photos will we get, and how do we receive them?+

Delivery is through an online gallery. It is hard to put an exact number on it, since it depends entirely on what happens during your day, but as a rough guide, expect around 100 finished images per hour of coverage. Most days end up with more than that.

IIWhen do we get them?+

A sneak peek within 24 hours for full day bookings, and your full gallery within four weeks. Video is delivered within eight weeks. If you would rather not wait, priority editing is available to move you ahead of the queue.

IIIDo you offer prints or albums?+

Yes to both. Prints are available directly through your online gallery. Albums are custom made with premium covers, and every full day package comes with a $200 album credit. The signature album is a 12x12 inch handcrafted linen album with a matte image printed linen cover, premium matte ivory layflat pages, a professionally designed layout, and two rounds of design revisions included, starting from $1295.

IVCan we keep our photos private?+

Of course. If you would rather your photos were not used on social media or my website, just let me know. Your gallery is also password protected, so only the people you choose to share the link and password with can see them.

VAre you insured?+

Yes, fully, and I can provide your venue with a copy on request.

Part four

On the day

IWhen should the photographer arrive?+

There is no single right answer, which is exactly why I run a planning call four to six weeks out from your wedding, so we work it out together for your day specifically. With a full day package, you never have to choose between getting ready photos and your exit at the end of the night. It all gets covered.

IIWhat happens if the timeline runs late?+

This is exactly why we build buffer time through the day. If Google Maps says a drive takes ten minutes, we plan for fifteen. If the ceremony is scheduled for 45 minutes, we allow 60. A timeline was never about running the day to the minute, it is about making sure there is space for everything that actually matters. So we should not run late, but if we do, there is no need to stress. Trust your vendors to help get things back on track.

IIIWill we miss our own cocktail hour?+

No. Timelines are built so you still get real time with your guests, rather than disappearing for hours to take photos. The day should feel balanced, never like it revolves around the camera.

IVDo we need to provide a meal for our photographer?+

It is included in the contract, and yes, I do ask for a meal on a full day wedding. I do not eat while I am working, but after years of doing this, I have learned that a fed photographer performs better all the way through to the end of the night. It also lines up naturally, since I am not photographing people eating anyway, so that stretch of the reception rarely has a camera pointed at it either way.

VDo you carry backup cameras and memory cards?+

Yes.

VICan our photographer work alongside a videographer?+

Of course. I often work alongside my own videographer, Fernando, but if you have already booked someone else, that is completely fine. My approach to photography actually complements videography well, since I like to include movement in my images rather than freezing everything still.

VIICan we have an unplugged ceremony?+

Honestly, I recommend it. There is nothing worse than a beautiful photo of the two of you ruined by a phone held up in the aisle, or a guest stepping into the shot right as you kiss. Ask everyone to put their phones away, enjoy the moment, and trust the vendors you have hired to do their job.

Part five

How I work

IWhat does “candid wedding photography” actually mean?+

To me, it means photographing the day as it happens rather than directing it to happen a certain way. No forced smiles, no held poses, no moments manufactured for the camera. But candid does not mean I stand back all day and let things drift into chaos or leave you feeling awkward without direction. It is intentional. I do not leave things to chance, I just choose stillness over control wherever the day allows it, and step in with quiet guidance the moment it is actually needed. The photographs that come from that are honest, and honest is what still means something when you look back in twenty years.

IIHow do you photograph the moments we don't even notice happening?+

Experience, mostly. After shooting more than 250 weddings and lifestyle sessions, it becomes second nature. I also think it is part of what I am genuinely good at. I have always been a naturally observant person, and I am constantly reading cues in people's faces and body language, looking for the moment just before or just after the obvious one.

IIIHow do you balance candid photos with the photos our family expects?+

Most families expect a handful of traditional group photos, and that is completely reasonable, they matter and they last. I keep that part efficient and organised so it does not eat into the day, then spend the rest of the time working candidly rather than directing. You get both: the classic shots your family will want, and the honest, unposed photographs that actually show what the day felt like.

IVWhat makes a wedding photograph meaningful 20 years from now?+

Truth, not polish. A photo taken in a trend that has since passed will always look like it belongs to that year. Mel and I have been together for over eighteen years and married for more than ten, and the photos of us that mean the most are the ones where we were simply being ourselves. A good photograph should transport you back to that exact moment, let you feel what you felt again, not just show you what you looked like. That is why I edit naturally rather than chasing whatever look is popular this season. Skin tones that look like you and colours that feel like the day did are still going to feel right decades from now.

VWhy does your photographer's personality matter?+

Because you will spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else, including most of your guests. If that person makes you feel watched, judged, or like you are performing, it shows in every photograph, whether you notice it in the moment or not. A photographer who puts you at ease is not a nice extra, it is the difference between photos that look like you and photos that look like a shoot.

VIShould you choose a photographer based on their Instagram?+

Instagram will show you their best twenty photos from the last twelve months, which tells you they can take a beautiful picture. It will not tell you whether you will feel comfortable standing in front of them for ten hours, whether they will read your family's dynamics well, or whether they will still be answering your emails calmly a week before the wedding.

It is also worth being alert to something happening more often lately. With the rise of AI, some wedding vendors are now using generated or heavily manipulated content in their highlight reels. I say this because it is a real concern, and I have had couples come to me after discovering it had happened to them elsewhere. A handful of stunning fake images is easy to produce. Consistency across a thousand genuine photographs from a single real wedding day is not. Look at full galleries where you can, not just the highlight reel, and talk to the person before you decide.

VIIWhat is your biggest piece of wedding day advice?+

Be present. The moments you will remember most are not always the ones that were perfectly planned. Trust the team you have built around you, they are experts, and trusting them to do their job is what lets you actually enjoy the day.
