Planning a Canberra wedding day
Canberra rewards a bit of planning around its seasons and its rules. None of it is complicated, it just helps to know before your timeline is set.
Winter here is not something to survive, it is a reason to marry here
Canberra gets properly cold, and that is a good thing for your photographs, not a problem to work around. Open fires, candles, everyone standing a little closer for warmth. Brown leaves against evergreens and a white dress is a colour palette you genuinely do not see much of anywhere else in Australian weddings. Plan for it rather than fight it, and winter becomes one of the best times of year to marry here.
Summer needs a real weather plan, not a hopeful one
Summer in Canberra has its own charm, Shaw Estate in the height of summer felt like a European summer celebration. But the heat is real, and the advice is the same either season, have an actual plan B. You do not want sixty minutes of bridal portraits in direct midday heat any more than you want an extended stretch outside on a freezing winter afternoon. Build shade and timing into the plan from the start.
Everything is close, which gives you more options than most regions
Heritage estates, modern venues and rustic country properties all sit within around an hour of each other here. That means your ceremony and reception do not have to compromise on style to be close together, which is not true of most regions this varied.
Some of Canberra's best known locations need a permit first
A few of Canberra's most photogenic spots sit on land that requires approval before you can shoot there commercially, the National Arboretum and Parliament House among them. Adrian, the director of Timeless Creations, and I have been good friends for years, and we bonded early on over a shared love of photography. These days we shoot alongside each other, sometimes I photograph for Adrian, sometimes he photographs for me, and every Canberra wedding I have shot so far has come through that relationship. What I love about Canberra is that it has something for everyone. Heritage estates, modern architecture, rustic country properties, all sitting within about an hour of each other. Whatever feel you are after for your wedding, there is a genuine chance you will find it here without needing to compromise.

Shaw Estate opened in July 2024, Mediterranean inspired design set against the Southern Tablelands, manicured gardens and rows of vines. In the height of summer it felt like a proper European celebration, with family from across the globe and a dance floor that barely emptied.

IIDo you charge travel to Canberra?+
No. I do not charge travel to Canberra. I genuinely love being in the region, and if it is a big day, I have plenty of friends and family nearby I can stay with afterwards rather than driving straight home.

Genuinely, yes. Canberra winters are cold, but that cold creates a closeness in your photographs you do not get in most Australian weddings, open fires, candles, everyone standing a little nearer for warmth. Plan for it properly and it becomes one of the best reasons to marry here rather than something to work around.
